Walk-through or drive-through?
Maryland light displays come in two kinds. Drive-through shows are seen from your car, which is cozy on a cold night but means no stops, no cocoa in hand, and no photos outside the windshield. Walk-through shows put you on the trail itself, at your own pace, usually with food, rides, or Santa along the way. Most families find walk-through displays worth the jacket. Below, each display is labeled so you can match the night to your crew.
1. Maryland Holiday Light Spectacular, Timonium
Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Rd, Lutherville-Timonium
Full disclosure: this one is ours, and we think it earns the top spot. More than a million lights cover a half-mile walking trail at the Timonium fairgrounds, with a winter carnival and Ferris wheel, giant snow globes, the Swiss Holiday Village vendor market, the Horseland petting zoo every Friday through Sunday, and live Santa nightly through December 23.
It runs select nights from December 3 to 30, 2026, open 5:30 to 9:30PM with last entry at 9PM. Kids 4 to 13 are $10, kids 3 and under are free, and after 7:30PM everyone gets in for $10. Parking is free, and the Light Rail stops at the gate. See tickets and pricing or plan your trip with our directions and parking guide.
2. Symphony of Lights, Columbia
Merriweather Post Pavilion area, Columbia
A Howard County tradition for decades, Symphony of Lights is a drive-through route of large animated displays near Merriweather. It is an easy pick for families with very young kids or anyone who wants to stay warm in the car. Check their site for this season's dates and vehicle pricing.
3. Zoo Lights at the Maryland Zoo, Baltimore
The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Druid Hill Park
The Maryland Zoo strings its paths with lights and animal-themed displays for a walk-through evening event. The animals themselves are mostly tucked in for the night, but the setting is hard to beat. A good match for zoo members and city families.
4. Miracle on 34th Street, Hampden
W 34th Street, Hampden, Baltimore
One Baltimore block where nearly every rowhouse goes all in: hubcap Christmas trees, crab-themed displays, and lights on every surface. It is free, it is iconic, and it is packed on weekends, so expect to hunt for parking. Go on a weeknight and grab dinner in Hampden after.
5. Lights on the Bay, Annapolis
Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis
A scenic drive-through route along the Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point State Park, with the Bay Bridge in the background. Displays line the shoreline road, and proceeds support a local charity. One of the prettiest settings of any Maryland light show.
6. Winter City Lights, Olney
Olney, Montgomery County
A large walk-through light festival in Montgomery County with themed zones, food, and entertainment. If you are coming from the DC side of the region, it is one of the closest big walk-through options.
7. Winter Lights Festival, Gaithersburg
Seneca Creek State Park, Gaithersburg
The City of Gaithersburg runs a 3.5-mile drive-through route through Seneca Creek State Park, one of the longest in the region. A classic for Montgomery County families, with special walk and bike nights usually offered early in the season.
8. Festival of Lights, Upper Marlboro
Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro
Prince George's County's drive-through display winds through Watkins Regional Park with animated scenes and tunnels of light. An affordable per-car night out on the DC side of Maryland.
Local tip: most Maryland light displays are busiest the two weekends before Christmas. For shorter lines anywhere on this list, go on a weeknight in early December, or late in the evening. At our show in Timonium, everyone gets in for $10 after 7:30PM, and the crowds thin right as the lights look their best.
